Masayuki Yabuuchi was a leading animal painter and picture book illustrator in Japan. In addition to his own works such as "Animals Living in the Sea: Japanese Mammals II" (1994/Iwasaki Shoten) and "Sea Birds" (1980/Fukuinkan Shoten), he created numerous picture books depicting marine life, including "Whales" (written by Masaharu Nishiwaki/1970/Fukuinkan Shoten). This mug was created in conjunction with the 2021 exhibition "Japanese Mammals - Marine Edition" held at the Masayuki Yabuuchi Museum, Japan's only museum specializing in animal paintings, which opened in Hokuto City, Yamanashi Prefecture, after Yabuuchi's death. "The creatures that live in the sea are diverse and each has a strong personality; the more you learn about them, the more you are drawn to their charm. Masayuki Yabuuchi's biological illustrations are exquisite and lively, conveying their charm perfectly. Since mugs are something you use every day, you can cherish your favorite creature like a 'fangirl'."Yumi Nakata)
